HISTORY OF 'CRAGGAN'

‘CRAGGAN’ is set in a secluded valley in the Acheron River watershed surrounded by undulating farmland with blue forested mountains featuring as a backdrop. The district is a highly regarded tourist and recreation area with the major towns of Alexandra to the north and Marysville to the south, provide excellent starting points for all snow and water sports as well as other outdoor activities. Food and accommodation is available and varies from the basic to luxurious 5 star.

The Acheron Valley is situated within the Shire of Murrindindi on the northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range, 120 km’s north east of Melbourne in the state of Victoria, Australia. It has historically been a beef and prime lamb production area but is evolving into vineyards, orchards and other alternative rural enterprises being developed.

The Cumming family were among the first permanent white settlers to the area, selecting 270 acres in the late 1860’s shortly after gold fever hit the district.

Since then further selections and purchases were made by ancestors as families grew and farming changed. Eric Cumming selected the area where the Craggan" homestead and farm centre now stands.("Craggan" is Scottish for rocky outcrop.)

Eric’s son George purchased land to increase the size of the holding and George’s son Bruce has also purchased adjoining land in recent years. Other members of the family made selections and purchases over the years but the property has now been consolidated by George and Bruce into approx. 2000 acres.

The property is a mixture of bush and open country, well watered by dams and creeks, native wildlife including kangaroos, wombats and koalas co-exists comfortably with the cattle, sheep and other farm enterprises.

"Craggan" has been held by the Cumming family for five generations.

Dogs have been an integral part of the property since its selection. Originally the dogs were used for the protection and mustering of livestock, but have always been bred and bought for both work and pleasure.

In the 1990’s the interest in pure bred dogs has evolved into a registered breeding operation. This breeding operation has been strengthened with the merging of "Rysewood Kennels"(est. 1985) into the broader "CRAGGAN" business enterprise.

An early interest in gundog breeds has been consolidated and formalized by expanding the already solid "Dalmatian" breeding and showing program to now include the "Hungarian Vizsla’s".

This well established family property welcomes inquiries from breeders and prospective buyers.
