MICROCHIPPING
Here at Craggan all our puppies are Micro chipped at 6 weeks old. The cost of it is now covered in the purchase price. This service is not compulsorily in Victoria unlike New South Wales which asks for the animal to be Chipped by 12 months old. This then puts the onerous onto the new owner to have the chipping done at there cost. We feel it must be made the breeders responsibility to chip all Puppies or Dogs before they are sold, in whatever State of Australia that they live in.
The Microchip is inserted just near the shoulder blades ,subcutaneously (under the skin). It is the size of a grain of rice. There is a lot of misleading information being circulated about these chips, such as that they travel through the body and lodge them selves in the heart or brain and thus killing the animal. This is most untrue indeed. They may move slightly under the skin but it is impossible for them to get into major arteries or veins and move around the animals body. Please visit Central Animal Records below to find out more information on this procedure. Just click on the logo....
Since we have been chipping all our puppies we have had only 2 cases of dogs lost and luckily thanks to the chip both where returned to there owners with the hour.

The first was a puppy we sold to Longford Tasmania. We were over there last May holidaying and catching up with the owners and their new puppies. (all were bought sight unseen)
We had only been home a week and I received a call from Central Animal Records advising me of a female pup that was roaming loose in Longford Tasmania. They stated that they were unable to contact the owners by phone as there was no answer at the contact numbers given. Lucky for the pup we had only been there a week before hand and I knew where the owner worked on weekends. I gave them the address and they contacted him. They could not get hold of anyone by phone as they were all out looking for the said puppy. I can tell you a family was very happy to see their 'Chloe'.......and so was I!!!!!!!

The second one was just the other night actually the 15th of May, 2001. I had just sat down to dinner and a call came through from the Frankston Vet Clinic who had been given a dog who had been running up and down the Frankston - Flinders Hwy stopping the traffic!!!!!. They scanned the Dog to find a Microchip and ringing C.A.R and found that it was only registered with the breeder. They rang me to find out who might be the owner. I searched through my records to find a dog matching the microchip number and amazed to find that they were in fact a client of the said vet. The dog was returned to the most embarrassed owner 15 minutes later who has I am told paid her $16.00 life time subscription so this does no happen again.

The above instances just prove to us how important this simple service is. We do not care how much it costs. Just knowing that a lost pet is returned safe and sound to its rightful owner is more than satisfying.
